Many people fear dealing with money, believing it to be inherently evil. T
his misunderstanding often stems from the misquoted phrase, “Money is the root of all evil.”
This belief has led to an unhealthy view of wealth, where people avoid engaging with it altogether, losing sight of its potential as a tool for good.
The truth, however, is far more balanced and empowering when we understand the context of 1 Timothy 6:8-12.
In this passage, the Apostle Paul explains that money itself is not evil; rather, it’s the love of money—an unhealthy obsession or greed—that leads to all kinds of harm.
Paul urges believers to find contentment, writing, “But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that” (v. 8). He warns that “Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction” (v. 9). This highlights the dangers of making wealth an idol, but it does not condemn money itself.
Instead, Paul calls Christians to focus on pursuing “righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness” (v. 11), encouraging them to “fight the good fight of the faith” (v. 12).
This passage reminds us that money is a neutral resource—what matters is how we use it and whether we allow it to control us.
